1. Remote Managed Services for Commercial Clients
Business Challenge
All businesses that house database environments face challenges with their mission critical data, and most of our clients' issues were very common in nature. All had databases that needed attention, but the businesses lacked the qualified staff to provide the level of support that was required. Our challenge was to find a solution to each of their needs. We have supported a wide range of services to our remote customers ranging from those companies that wanted to completely outsource their IT work, as well as those who just wanted additional support to augment their existing IT staff. In all cases, our clients were faced with needing to bring on additional DBA support, but did not need full-time support or did not have the budget to do so. The following data details 6 different high profile clients with a wide range of service needs, and the quantifiable benefits that they experience.
Figure 1 below quantifies the benefits some of our clients experience on an annual basis by using our remote services to augment their current support.
Solution Overview
Client A (Manufacturing - Iowa)
Requires complete database outsourcing. We provide remote support for the client's Oracle database/PeopleSoft running in a UNIX environment. We implemented 24x7x365 proactive database monitoring scripts, perform routine database maintenance, system administration, and 24x7x365 on-call support with immediate response time. We periodically visit the client's site for special upgrades and performance testing.
Client B (Distribution - Indiana)
Requires complete database support outsourcing. Client B manufactures and distributes products to thousands of users nationwide. We provide proactive monitoring, routine maintenance, and 24x7x365 emergency on-call support for the client's SQL Server database environment. We have made numerous performance enhancements that increased productivity and improved service to the client's customers.
Client C (Retail Printing - Indiana)
Client C, a retail printing company, that provides graphics and signage to companies nationwide, outsourced their database administration to Perpetual Technologies. We provide remote Oracle database support through 24x7x365 proactive monitoring, routine database maintenance, backup and recovery support, and performance tuning.
Client D (Logistics - Indiana)
Client D completely outsourced its database support to us. At the time this client hired us, they had a new Oracle database running in a UNIX environment and no database expertise in house. We were brought in to assess their database environment, develop/implement a backup and recovery plan, and provide continual proactive monitoring and database maintenance. Client D has a small database compared to most of our clients, but their data is critical nonetheless. The client knew their database did not require a lot of attention, but also recognized the risk of not having immediate access to expert database personnel.
Client E (Data/Marketing Services - California)
Client E completely outsourced its database support to us. We were hired to provide remote Oracle DBA support, 24x7x365 proactive monitoring/maintenance/on-call support with immediate response time, Linux support, and application support. For less than half the cost of on full-time employee, Client E receives subject matter expertise in 3 distinct technologies with guaranteed database availability and response time in emergency situations.
Client F (Utility Company - Indiana)
Client F hired us to augment its current database support team. We were brought in to train their internal database team on the job, provide augmented database support to spread the workload, provide 24x7x365 on-call availability, and proactively monitor its databases 24x7x365.
For each of our clients above, we provide 24x7x365 emergency on-call support with guaranteed response time. We also guarantee database availability and we are able to proactively identify potential database problems, minimizing both database downtime and resulting impact on client business operations.

3. Managed Services for the Department of Defense
Since 1997 Perpetual Technologies has provided managed services (database/system/application administration, etc.) at the enterprise level for the Department of Defense. Perpetual Technologies supports 29 DoD sites, 400+ enterprise Oracle applications, and thousands of users. This client proved the concept of consolidating its information systems and created a centrally located organization to remotely manage information systems worldwide. Perpetual Technologies' role quickly grew from providing database/system administration support to development support, business intelligence consulting, data warehousing, web administration, and ePortal architecture and administration. By consolidating its information technology support, this DoD client has more control over IT operations, has optimized its own resources, has saved millions of tax dollars, operates more effectively, and provides much better customer service to its clients. Related departments and organizations have since decided to follow this example. |

4. Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) IT Project Management Problem:
Processing enormous amounts of data everyday, Defense Finance and Accounting Systems (DFAS) lacked efficiency in its operations and communication flows. The organization disburses over $39 billion annually in pay transactions to over $1.9 million active and former soldiers or family members.
Solution
Seeking to minimize expenses while maximizing functionality, project managers conducted a problem investigation that led to the creation of a resolution strategy. This strategy produced details describing how the planning, tracking, and reporting of all activities would occur. Once initiation of the project occured, project managers carried out the responsibility of managing all schedules, work-in-progress, and commitments to deliver for both internal and external counterparts. Constantly performing technology refreshes, the team developed an application that increased the ability to efficiently communicate both externally and within the organization.
Benefits
| - |
The resolution strategy increased efficiency within the organization by customizing an application to suit DFAS |
|
| - |
ePortal, an implemented deliverable, enables customization of what is seen and how it is organized on a personal computer |
| - |
A new knowledge directory allows individuals or groups to publish documents that become accessible to all. |
| - |
A new collaboration space and discussion threads for team projects, task lists, project calendars, and other options resulted in more fluid communication throughout the organization. |
Any successful IT project requires excellent project management, and PTI has multiple examples of success in this area. At DFAS, success is exemplified through the wide range of benefits seen from PTI's project management consulting.

5. Major Insurance Company
Overview:
A high-profile insurance company frequently ships large, bulky paper proposals to potential clients over a wide geographic area. An electronic solution would allow for quick assembly and packaging of digital proposals. Digital proposals would reduce labor, shipping, and printing costs.
Solution:
A Windows desktop application was implemented. Using shared network resources allows employees to collaborate and easily create proposals, presentations, and other documents with professional appeal. The resulting package can contain any number of files in virtually unlimited different formats. The documents are organized, well-presented, and easy to read on the client's machine.
Benefit:
Migrating and deploying a replacement commission system that provides increased data reliability.
PTI successfully assessed hardware needs, configuration requirements, database software analysis, database architecture design, creation, test server setup, database migration, and deployment. These assessments resulted in increased data reliability.

6. Leading Electronics Products Manufacturer
Problem:
The client required an internal web-based application to track and monitor its shipping and inventory.
Overview:
The business challenge could not be resolved on time or within budget by using traditional training means. The team needed to learn the Java Development Kit, Java integration into a web environment using rapidly-developing Java Server Pages, and Java Database Connectivity communications with an Oracle database from a Java Server page. After these core training objectives were identified, PTI worked with the client to develop course content as well as hands-on labs that met and exceeded their training needs. These concepts and topics were expanded into a four-day, eight-section, customized course.
Benefit:
PTI tailored coursed content specifically for the company, giving them an individualized solution that saved them both time and money.
PTI developed a customized training solution within the time frame of an off-the-shelf course. This tailoring resulted in saving the client both time and money.
